TENSILE STRUCTURES / SPIDER WEBS
The Intelligent Manufacturing Workshop 2018 is a two-week intensive workshop embedded in the 3d years structural courses that introduces the students to parametric geometry, digital fabrication, spatial structures, single tension/compres-
sion structures, and full scale construction.
This years workshop is organised in collaboration with Tomás Saraceno and his
studio. He is a renowned contemporary artist based in Berlin working on spiderwebs, tensile and lightweight structures. The
whole workshop is about producing a final design with different groups of students. The students get 4 days of 1 to 1 courses on
structural tension/compression design and numerical/digital tools such as Rhino, Grasshopper and Karamba3D. They master
the digital tools to produce the physical models in parallel. They are further followed by people from Studio Saraceno for the
large scale installations. The workshop is also animated by numerous lectures and theoretical courses on both structural and
geometric subjects
