Expanded Concrete

The concrete canvas is a new way of using concrete. We wanted to explore how this medium could be shaped and transformed. We tested a few ways of exploring the shape and the layering of the concrete stripes and we soon realized that it would be very interesting to use gravity as the main tool in our work. We imagined different structures on which we could hang our concrete canvas in order to give it a particular shape. We realized few plaster models that we hung upside down, the goal was to freeze the weight of the structure in its own shape. Having these experiences in mind we tried to search how we could enrich our work, how we could go further. Quickly we were drawn to the idea of recreating the shape of expanded metal with concrete. This way we could still use gravity and it would allow us to expand the general volumetry of our sculpture without adding matter. Our project is a cylinder that marks the landscape by its height and its slender aspect. The aim of this project is to go the highest by using the fewest material. We bore cuts into 1.1m stripes of concrete that we sewed together. We hung everything on a wooden beam inside the school. By stretching, the perforated material is able to get twice its original size.
