Inspired by Tomás Saraceno’s artistic work, « How to entangle the universe in a spider web », the workshop develops
the theme of webs, especially to reproduce the spider’s method that comes to use synclastic and anticlastic surfaces. The final goal was to seek for a form, a shaped spatial structure designed and classified according to three categories of spider webs : black widow web, cyrtophora cicatrosa’s web and latrodectus pallidus’s web. The first week of the workshop was devoted to the research and the realization of a project with membranes in tension
by groups of four students. The educational objective here is to relate two different approaches; one physical, one digital. It results in the production of two models, one digital in Rhino with structural calculation and the other physical. All the groups followed these two approaches in parallel in order to enrich their conception and their comprehension of the studied phenomena. The two approaches are complementary, both in the design of the elements and in terms of structural behavior analysis and manufacturing. This also makes it possible to check the veracity of the numerical model and vice versa.
